February 2019

First grade is off to a great start with the new calendar year!  We continue to work on mindfulness and team building skills each morning in order to get ourselves ready for the day and to make kind choices.

In Writer’s Workshop we just finished up our “All About” books that focused on adding non-fiction text features.  We just started writing short narrative stories while using Robert Munsch and/or Mo Willems as our author mentor. We will learn about some of the strategies and techniques that he uses when writing to help us become better writers.  During Reader’s Workshop we are talking about different character traits and how characters shape our stories. While students are independently learning, teachers are taking small groups for more individualized instruction that will meet their most immediate needs.

First grade math has been focused on number fluency and both addition and subtraction equations and word problems.  We are now exploring data collection and how that translates onto graphs and charts. Comparison problems are a particular challenge that we are spending a lot of time working on in small groups and centers. The students participate in engaging math centers that reinforce new topics while the teacher takes small groups to provide more individualized instruction.  This allows the classroom teachers to provide extra support tailored to specific student needs as well as the opportunity to challenge the learners that would benefit from this.

October 2018

First grade would like to welcome Ms. Martin, our newest teacher!  We are off to a great start with the school year. We are currently running through routines and expectations to create a safe and caring environment for all learners.  We are learning to work with partners and in small groups effectively by taking turns and sharing ideas. This lays the groundwork for discourse in all academic areas that will continue throughout the year.

We are starting off the year focusing on small moments and how authors’develop their own stories.  We are using mentor texts, such as Kevin Henkes books, to explore how authors write. This concept carries over throughout the school year and into our reader’s workshop block.  In reader’s workshop we are currently introducing and practicing literacy centers to develop independent learning. While students are independently learning, teachers are taking small groups for more individualized instruction that will meet their most immediate needs.

First grade math has been focused on number fluency and reviewing kindergarten objectives.  We are now moving into geometry and are currently exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes and their attributes.  The students participate in engaging math centers that reinforce new topics while the teacher takes small groups to provide more individualized instruction.  This will allow the classroom teachers to provide extra support tailored to specific student needs as well as the opportunity to challenge the learners that would benefit from this.
